Virginia was born May 14, 1920 in Hoke County, NC. She died Sunday, July 24 at her home in Rocky Mount surrounded by her family's love. She was predeceased by her parents, Thomas S. and Eliza Lipscomb of Angier, her husband, Jiggs Overton of Roanoke Rapids, and brothers, Ernest Lipscomb of Angier, Tommy Lipscomb of Clayton, Billy Lipscomb of Raleigh and infants Paul and Carl Lipscomb.

Virginia is survived by her daughter, Gay and husband Phil Jackson of the home and her son, Chuck and wife Janet Overton of Roanoke Rapids. She was Granny to Tripper Twisdale of Virginia, Penny Twisdale of Rocky Mount, Jacob Overton of Gaston, and Danielle Overton of Boone, great-grandson, Robert Twisdale of Illinois, much loved former son-in-law, Ken Twisdale, of Enfield, step-grandsons and wives, Chris and Melissa Jackson of Wilmington and Matt and Lauren Jackson of Charlotte. She is also survived by brother, Joe and wife Genevieve Lipscomb of Raleigh, and sister Anne and husband, J.B. Britt of Angier, sisters-in-law, Evelyn O. Dawson of Apex, Ava Overton of Raleigh, Joyce L. Canady of Clayton and many nieces and nephews. Among them, she was especially close to Gil and Jan Lipscomb of Hanahan, SC, Larry Lipscomb of Charlotte and Shirley L. Hawley of Raleigh. She also leaves her longtime friend and caregiver, Ann Filppi and husband Rick, extended family and wonderful friends.

She taught us by example to take responsibility for our actions by admitting mistakes, correcting the error and forgiving ourselves. We were not allowed to use the word can't in our home. She taught us that no one is better than we are and that we are no better than anyone else. Both of us can count on one hand the number of times we saw her angry. Most of all, she taught us how to give. Whether it was support, time or money, she gave throughout her life. Whether they stayed overnight or for months, she took in everyone and every critter we brought home and made them family. She was a second Mama and Granny to many people. She loved to travel and some of her fondest memories were of visits to the Holy Land.

Mama was a founding member of the Roanoke Valley Pilot Club. She said that she had more fun with the projects, events, trips, Lifeline clients and close friends she made there than at any other time in her life. She held many offices in the Pilot Club and was Volunteer of the Year each year from 1991 to 1996. She worked over 5000 hours at the front desk and in the gift shop as a member of Halifax Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She was also a member of and volunteer for the American Red Cross, American Legion Auxiliary, the Roanoke Valley Shrinettes, and the Order of the Eastern Star. She supported many Christian and conservative organizations. In 1988, she received the NC Governor's Volunteer Award.

She was a member of Chockoyotte Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, sang in the choir and held many church offices. Our Pastors were often at our house for meals and company. Later in life, she was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church and then Victory Baptist Church.

Virginia graduated from Angier High School and Hardbarger's Business College in Raleigh. She was employed by the NC Employment Security Commission as a court recorder for several years. The family lived in Asheville and Henderson before moving to Weldon and then Roanoke Rapids. She and Jiggs established Blue Flame Fuels, Roanoke Valley Ice Company, Overton Scour Power and Chuck's Transports.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 27 at 9:30 a.m. followed by the service at 11:00 at Askew Funeral Services in Roanoke Rapids with interment following at Cedarwood Cemetery. Friends and family will also gather at the home of Chuck and Janet Overton in Roanoke Rapids. We are grateful for the care Mama received from Community Home Care and Hospice.
